في كلّ ليلة حمّامٍ كان غسل الشعر أسوأ جزء، فلم يكن مَجْد يحبّ الماء يسيل على وجهه؛ يدخل عينيه وأنفه. والليلة، ما إن مدّت ماما يدها إلى الإبريق حتّى غطّى مَجْد وجهه بيديه: «ليس الليلة!»
Every bath night, hair washing was the worst part. Majd really didn't like water running over his face. It got in his eyes and up his nose. Tonight, as soon as Mama reached for the jug, Majd clamped his hands over his face. "Not tonight!"
فوضعت ماما الإبريق: «أتعرف كيف يُبعد السمك الماء عن عينيه؟» فاختلس مَجْد النظر: «كيف؟» قالت ماما: «ينظر إلى السماء، فينزلق الماء عن ظهره. هل تجرّب أن تكون سمكة؟»
Mama put the jug down. "Do you know how fish keep water out of their eyes?" she asked. Majd peeped out. "How?" "They look up at the sky," said Mama, "and the water slides off their backs. Want to try being a fish?"
فألصقت ماما ملصق نجمة بحرٍ على السقف فوق الحوض تماماً: «انظر إلى نجمة البحر وابق ناظراً.» فأمال مَجْد رأسه إلى الوراء وحدّق فيها، وسكبت ماما الماء ببطءٍ من الأمام، فسال على ظهره، ولا قطرة في عينيه!
Mama stuck a starfish sticker on the ceiling, right above the bath. "Look at the starfish," she said, "and keep looking." Majd tipped his head back and stared at it. Mama poured the water slowly from the front. It ran down his back. Not one drop in his eyes!
فقال مَجْد: «نجحت!» فلفّته ماما بالمنشفة، ثمّ دثّرته في السرير وشعره النظيف ما زال رطباً، وقالت: «كنت سمكةً صغيرةً شجاعة.» فابتسم مَجْد يفكّر في نجمة البحر، ونام. النهاية.
"I did it!" said Majd. Mama wrapped him in a towel, then tucked him into bed with damp, clean hair. "You were a brave little fish," she said. Majd smiled, thinking about the starfish, and fell asleep. The end.
