حين أطفأت ماما النور الكبير، امتلأت غرفة مَجْد بالظلال: بدا المعطف على الباب مثل شخص، وكانت الزاوية قرب الخزانة شديدة السواد. فهمس مَجْد وهو يشدّ البطانيّة حتّى أنفه: «ماما، أنا لا أحبّ الظلام.»
When Mama switched off the big light, Majd's room filled with shadows. The coat on the door looked like a person, and the corner by the wardrobe was very black. "Mama, I don't like the dark," Majd whispered, pulling the blanket up to his nose.
فجلست ماما على السرير وقالت: «عندي شيءٌ قد يساعد.» وأخذت سيارة الجيب الصغيرة عن الرفّ، وضغطت زرّاً على سقفها. تك! فأضاء مصباحان أماميّان قويّان. وقالت: «ما رأيك أن تقود في الغرفة وتتفقّدها؟»
Mama sat on the bed. "I have something that might help," she said. She took his little toy jeep from the shelf and pressed a button on its roof. Click! Two bright headlights shone out. "Why don't you drive around and check the room?"
فقاد مَجْد الجيب ببطءٍ على البطانيّة. أضاء الشعاعان المعطف: مجرّد معطف. ثمّ الزاوية: كرةٌ ودبدوبٌ فقط. ثمّ تحت السرير: خفّان فقط. فقال مَجْد مندهشاً: «لا يوجد شيء!»
Majd drove the jeep slowly along the blanket. The beams lit up the coat: just a coat. Then the corner: just a ball and a teddy. Then under the bed: only slippers. "There's nothing there," said Majd, surprised.
قالت ماما: «الظلام يخفي الأشياء فقط، لكنّه لا يغيّرها.» وتركت الجيب على الطاولة الصغيرة، ومصابيحه تضيء بهدوء. فشعر مَجْد بالشجاعة والدفء، وأغمض عينيه ونام. النهاية.
"The dark only hides things," said Mama. "It doesn't change them." She left the jeep on the bedside table with its lights glowing softly. Majd felt brave and cosy. He closed his eyes and fell asleep. The end.
