بعد أن قرأ بابا قصّة الأميرة وأطفأ المصباح مباشرةً جلس مَجْد: «أحتاج إلى الحمّام.» وكان الحمّام في آخر الممرّ، والممرّ مظلمٌ طويل. فسأل: «هل تأخذني؟» فسأل بابا بلطف: «في كلّ مرّة؟ أظنّك تستطيع.»
Just after Baba had read the princess story and turned off the lamp, Majd sat up. "I need the toilet," he said. The bathroom was at the end of the hall, and the hall was dark and long. "Can you take me?" he asked. "Every time?" asked Baba gently. "I think you could do it."
وأخرج مصباحاً يدويّاً صغيراً من الدرج: «في كتاب الأميرة، ماذا حملت الأميرة وهي تمشي في القلعة المظلمة؟» فتذكّر مَجْد: «فانوساً.» «بالضبط، وهذا فانوسك، وسأقف عند الباب تماماً، وتستطيع أن توجّه الضوء إليّ متى شئت.»
He took a small torch from the drawer. "In the princess book, what did the princess carry when she walked through the dark castle?" Majd remembered. "A lantern." "Exactly. This is your lantern. I'll stand right here at the door, and you can shine it back at me whenever you like."
فأمسك مَجْد المصباح بقوّة وخطا إلى الممرّ، فرسم الضوء دائرةً ساطعةً على الأرض. خطوة، ثمّ أخرى. ووجّه الضوء إلى بابا فلوّح. خطوةٌ وأخرى. باب الحمّام، زرّ الضوء، انتهى! ثمّ العودة كلّها، أسرع قليلاً، بابتسامةٍ عريضة.
Majd held the torch tight and stepped into the hall. The light made a bright circle on the floor. One step, two steps. He shone it back at Baba, who waved. Three steps, four. The bathroom door. The light switch. Done! Then all the way back, a little faster, with a big grin.
فصفّق بابا بكفّه على كفّه بصمت ودثّره من جديد: «مثل الأميرة صاحبة الفانوس.» فوضع مَجْد المصباح تحت الوسادة احتياطاً: «في المرّة القادمة أذهب وحدي»، ثمّ نام. النهاية.
Baba gave him a silent high five and tucked him back in. "Like the princess with the lantern," he said. Majd put the torch under his pillow, just in case. "Next time I'll go on my own," he said. Then he fell asleep. The end.
