الكرة في الظلام

The Ball in the Dark

كان مَجْد يلعب الكرة مع بابا في الحديقة بعد العشاء، والسماء تُظلم. ثمّ ركل بابا الكرة بقوّةٍ زائدة، فقفزت بعيداً إلى الزاوية البعيدة، خلف الشجيرة الكبيرة حيث لا يصل الضوء. فتوقّف مَجْد: «لن أذهب إلى هناك، إنّها مظلمةٌ جدّاً.»

Majd and Baba were playing football in the garden after dinner. The sky was getting dark. Then Baba kicked the ball too hard, and it bounced away into the far corner, behind the big bush where the light didn't reach. Majd stopped. "I'm not going there," he said. "It's too dark."

فأحضر بابا المصباح اليدويّ من المطبخ وسأل: «هل نذهب معاً؟ احمل المصباح، وأنت المسؤول.» فأخذ مَجْد المصباح، فكان ثقيلاً قويّاً، ووجّه الضوء إلى الشجيرة، ومشى بابا بجانبه خطوةً بعد خطوة.

Baba fetched the torch from the kitchen. "Shall we go together?" he asked. "You hold the torch, and you're in charge." Majd took the torch. It felt heavy and strong. He pointed the beam at the bush, and Baba walked beside him, step by step.

وفي ضوء المصباح لم تكن الزاوية المخيفة إلّا الحديقة: الشجيرة، والسور، ومرشّة ماما، وهناك، بين الأوراق، الكرة. فالتقطها مَجْد وقال مندهشاً: «إنّها الحديقة فقط في الظلام.» قال بابا: «بالضبط.»

In the torchlight, the scary corner was just the garden: the bush, the fence, Mama's watering can, and there, sitting in the leaves, the football. Majd picked it up. "It's only the garden in the dark," he said, surprised. "Exactly," said Baba.

وفي الداخل حكى مَجْد لماما كلّ شيءٍ عن المغامرة الشجاعة، فحضّرت ماما الحمّام، ثمّ دثّرته وتركت ضوء الليل مضاءً وقالت: «الظلام هو الحديقة وقد أغمضت عينيها.» فابتسم مَجْد وأغمض عينيه أيضاً. النهاية.

Back inside, Majd told Mama all about the brave mission. Mama ran his bath, then tucked him in and left the night light on. "The dark is just the garden with its eyes closed," she said. Majd smiled and closed his eyes too. The end.

خذوا خوف طفلكم عند النوم بجدّية. استمعوا أوّلاً، ثمّ انظروا معاً تحت السرير إن كان ذلك يطمئنه.
ضوءٌ ليليٌّ خافت ولعبةٌ مفضّلة ولعبةُ تنفّسٍ بطيء تجعل الظلام أكثر أماناً.
الشجاعة لا تعني ألّا نخاف. أخبروا طفلكم أنّ الشجاع يتقدّم وهو خائف.

Take bedtime fears seriously. Listen first, then look under the bed together if it helps.
A small night light, a favourite toy and a slow breathing game can make the dark feel safe.
Brave does not mean not scared. Tell your child that being brave is doing it while feeling scared.
