كان بقبوق، السمك الذهبيّ، يعيش في حوضٍ مستديرٍ على رفّ المطبخ، وكان بابا يطعمه دائماً بعد العشاء. لكنّ بابا الليلة كان مشغولاً بالهاتف، ثمّ بغسل الصحون، ثمّ بقراءة الجريدة. فراقب مَجْد بقبوق يفتح فمه ويغلقه عند سطح الماء.
Bubbles the goldfish lived in a round tank on the kitchen shelf. Baba always fed him after dinner. But tonight Baba was busy on the phone, and then he was washing up, and then he was reading the paper. Majd watched Bubbles opening and closing his mouth at the top of the water.
فقال مَجْد: «بابا، أظنّ أنّ بقبوق جائع.» فرفع بابا رأسه ووضع يده على جبينه: «نسيت تماماً! أحسنت الملاحظة.» وأحضر طعام السمك: «هل تريد أن تطعمه؟ قرصةً صغيرةً فقط، فبطون السمك صغيرةٌ جدّاً.»
"Baba," said Majd, "I think Bubbles is hungry." Baba looked up and put his hand on his head. "I completely forgot! Well spotted." He fetched the fish food. "Would you like to do it? Only a tiny pinch. Fish have very small tummies."
فأخذ مَجْد قرصةً صغيرةً كما أراه بابا ورشّها على الماء، فاندفع بقبوق إلى الأعلى والتهم الرقائق واحدةً بعد واحدة، ثمّ سبح دورةً سعيدةً حول الحوض يحرّك ذيله البرتقاليّ.
Majd took a tiny pinch, just like Baba showed him, and sprinkled it on the water. Bubbles darted up and gobbled the flakes one by one. Then he swam a happy loop around the tank, flicking his orange tail.
قال بابا: «ستكون المسؤول عن تذكيري كلّ مساء.» فشعر مَجْد بأهمّيّةٍ كبيرة. وبعد الحمّام دثّرته ماما وقالت: «بقبوق محظوظٌ بك.» فابتسم مَجْد ونام. النهاية.
"You can be in charge of reminding me every evening," said Baba. Majd felt very important. After his bath, Mama tucked him in. "Bubbles is lucky to have you," she said. Majd smiled and fell asleep. The end.
