كان مَجْد يحبّ الحمّام، والليلة عنده لعبةٌ جديدة: غوّاصةٌ تُدار بالمفتاح. وما إن فتحت ماما الصنبور حتّى أراد أن يضعها، لكن لم يكن في القاع إلّا بركةٌ صغيرة. قالت ماما: «ستعلق! انتظر حتّى يصير الماء عميقاً بما يكفي.»
Majd loved his bath, and tonight he had a new toy to try: a wind-up submarine. As soon as Mama turned on the taps, Majd wanted to put it in. But there was only a tiny puddle at the bottom. "It'll get stuck!" said Mama. "Wait until it's deep enough."
كان الانتظار صعباً، فصار مَجْد يقفز من قدمٍ إلى قدم. فخطرت لماما فكرة: وضعت بطّةً مطّاطيّةً على حافّة الحوض: «حين يصل الماء إلى قدمي البطّة تنزل الغوّاصة. لنراقبه وهو يرتفع.» فجثا مَجْد قرب الحوض يراقب.
Waiting was hard. Majd hopped from foot to foot. Mama had an idea. She put a rubber duck on the edge of the bath. "When the water reaches the duck's feet, the submarine can go in," she said. "Let's watch it rise." Majd knelt by the bath and watched.
وارتفع الماء ببطءٍ شديد: غطّى البالوعة، ثمّ وصل إلى أوّل بلاطة، ثمّ زحف إلى الأعلى دافئاً مليئاً بالفقاعات حتّى لمس قدمي البطّة. قالت ماما: «الآن!» فأدار مَجْد الغوّاصة وأطلقها، فغاصت إلى القاع وأخذت تطنّ وهي تسير.
Very slowly, the water climbed. It covered the plughole. It reached the first tile. It crept up and up, warm and bubbly, until it touched the duck's feet. "Now!" said Mama. Majd wound up the submarine and let it go. It dived to the bottom and whirred along.
فاستكشفت الغوّاصة الحوض كلّه، وبعدها جفّفت ماما مَجْد ودثّرته وقالت: «انتظرت الماء، وهذا ما يفعله قادة الغوّاصات الحقيقيّون.» فابتسم مَجْد ناعساً وأغمض عينيه. النهاية.
The submarine explored the whole bath. Afterwards, Mama dried Majd and tucked him in. "You waited for the water," she said. "That's what real submarine captains do." Majd smiled sleepily and closed his eyes. The end.
