حين كان مَجْد على وشك النوم، انفجر نباحٌ عالٍ عميقٌ في الظلام خارجاً، مرّةً بعد مرّة. فاعتدل مَجْد وقلبه يخفق؛ بدا الكلب ضخماً وقريباً جدّاً. فنادى: «بابا! هناك كلبٌ كبيرٌ مخيفٌ في الخارج!»
Just as Majd was drifting off, a loud, deep bark burst through the darkness outside: WOOF! Majd sat up, heart pounding. It sounded enormous, and very close. "Baba!" he called. "There's a big scary dog outside!"
فجاء بابا وأطلّ معه من بين الستائر. في حديقة الجيران، تحت ضوء المدخل، وقف كلبٌ بنّيٌّ منفوشٌ يهزّ ذيله. قال بابا: «هذا بستر، ينبح على القطط والأوراق، لكنّه طيّبٌ جدّاً في الحقيقة. أتذكر حين لحس يدك؟»
Baba came and peeked through the curtains with him. In the garden next door, under the porch light, stood a fluffy brown dog with a wagging tail. "That's Buster," said Baba. "He barks at cats and leaves. He's really a big softie. Remember when he licked your hand?"
فتذكّر مَجْد: بستر له ذيلٌ يتمايل ولسانٌ مضحك. ولم يعد النباح يبدو مخيفاً، بل كأنّ بستر يقول لقطّةٍ أن تعود إلى بيتها. فلوّح مَجْد من النافذة وهمس: «ليلة سعيدة يا بستر.»
Majd remembered. Buster had a waggy tail and a funny tongue. Now the barking didn't sound so scary. It sounded like Buster telling a cat to go home. Majd waved through the window. "Goodnight, Buster," he whispered.
ونادى صاحب بستر عليه ليدخل، فهدأ الليل. فأعاده بابا إلى السرير وقال: «كنت خائفاً، لكنّك نظرت وعرفت الحقيقة. هذه شجاعة.» فابتسم مَجْد، وبعد قليلٍ نام. النهاية.
Buster's owner called him inside, and the night went quiet. Baba tucked Majd back into bed. "You were scared, but you looked and found out the truth. That's brave," he said. Majd smiled and soon fell asleep. The end.
