النجوم تحتاج إلى الظلام

Stars Need the Dark

في كلّ ليلةٍ كان مَجْد يطلب أن يبقى النور الكبير مضاءً، وفي كلّ ليلةٍ يتركه بابا حتّى ينام. لكنّ بابا كان عنده الليلة مفاجأة، فقال: «أريدك أن تكون شجاعاً جدّاً وتدعني أطفئ النور، دقيقةً واحدةً فقط. هناك شيءٌ لا يُرى إلّا في الظلام.»

Every night, Majd asked for the big light to stay on, and every night Baba left it on until he fell asleep. But tonight, Baba had a surprise. He said, "I need you to be very brave and let me turn the light off. Just for one minute. There's something you can only see in the dark."

فضمّ مَجْد الدبدوب بقوّة ووافق: «دقيقةٌ واحدة.» وأطفأ بابا النور، فصار كلّ شيءٍ أسود لحظة، وخفق قلبه. ثمّ بدأت نجومٌ خضراء باهتةٌ تظهر ببطءٍ على السقف، عشراتٌ منها، وهلالٌ فوق النافذة.

Majd held Teddy very tight. "One minute," he agreed. Baba switched off the light. For a moment everything was black, and Majd's heart thumped. Then, slowly, pale green stars began to appear across the ceiling, dozens of them, and a crescent moon above the window.

همس مَجْد: «يا للروعة، إنّها تضيء!» قال بابا: «ألصقتها وأنت تستحمّ. إنّها تمتصّ الضوء ثمّ تعيده في الظلام، ولا تستطيع أن تلمع والنور الكبير مضاء. تحتاج إلى الظلام لتُرى.» فاستلقى مَجْد يتأمّل، ومرّت الدقيقة من دون أن ينتبه.

"Wow," breathed Majd. "They're glowing!" "I stuck them up during your bath," said Baba. "They soak up light, and give it back in the dark. They can't shine while the big light is on. They need the dark to be seen." Majd lay back and looked. The minute came and went. He didn't notice.

سأل بابا: «هل أعيد النور؟» فقال مَجْد: «لا، النجوم تحتاج إلى الظلام.» فدثّره بابا وقبّل جبينه، فنام مَجْد تحت سقفٍ مليءٍ بالنجوم، أشجع من أيّ وقتٍ مضى. النهاية.

"Shall I turn the light back on?" asked Baba. "No," said Majd. "The stars need it dark." Baba tucked him in and kissed his forehead. Majd fell asleep under a ceiling full of stars, braver than ever before. The end.

خذوا خوف طفلكم عند النوم بجدّية. استمعوا أوّلاً، ثمّ انظروا معاً تحت السرير إن كان ذلك يطمئنه.
ضوءٌ ليليٌّ خافت ولعبةٌ مفضّلة ولعبةُ تنفّسٍ بطيء تجعل الظلام أكثر أماناً.
الشجاعة لا تعني ألّا نخاف. أخبروا طفلكم أنّ الشجاع يتقدّم وهو خائف.

Take bedtime fears seriously. Listen first, then look under the bed together if it helps.
A small night light, a favourite toy and a slow breathing game can make the dark feel safe.
Brave does not mean not scared. Tell your child that being brave is doing it while feeling scared.
