بعد العطلة صار عند مَجْد دلوٌ كاملٌ من الصدف، وفي ذلك المساء أفرغه كلّه على أرض الغرفة ليتأمّله، فصار الصدف في كلّ مكان: على البساط، وتحت السرير، وحتّى واحدةٌ في خفّه. ثمّ دخل بابا حافياً وداس على صدفةٍ مدبّبة: «آي!»
After the holiday, Majd had a whole bucket of seashells. That evening he tipped them all out on the bedroom floor to look at them. There were shells everywhere: on the rug, under the bed, even one in his slipper. Then Baba came in barefoot and stepped right on a pointy one. "Ow!"
فقال مَجْد: «آسف يا بابا!» ففرك بابا قدمه وضحك: «الصدف مكانه البحر أو الدلو، لا تحت الأقدام.» وجلس على البساط: «لنفرزه: الصدف الذي يشبه المروحة هنا، والملتفّ هناك، والصغير جدّاً في هذا الكوب.»
"Sorry, Baba!" said Majd. Baba rubbed his foot and laughed. "Shells belong in the sea, or in a bucket. Not under feet." He sat down on the rug. "Let's sort them. Shells that look like fans go here. Curly ones go there. Tiny ones in this cup."
فحبا مَجْد في كلّ مكانٍ يجمع كلّ صدفة، حتّى التي تحت السرير: صدف المروحة في كومة، والملتفّ في كومةٍ أخرى، والصغير في الكوب. ثمّ أعادها كلّها إلى الدلو طبقات، وأجملها في الأعلى.
Majd crawled around collecting every shell, even the one under the bed. Fan shells in one pile. Curly shells in another. Tiny shells in the cup. Then he put them all back in the bucket in layers, with the most beautiful ones on top.
وجاءت ماما فرأت الأرض النظيفة والدلو المرتّب على الرفّ، فقال بابا: «لا صدف تحت الأقدام بعد الآن.» ودثّرت ماما مَجْد في السرير، فنام يفكّر في الشاطئ الذي جاءت منه كلّ صدفة. النهاية.
Mama came in and saw the clear floor and the neat bucket on the shelf. "No more shells under feet," said Baba. Mama tucked Majd into bed. He fell asleep thinking about the beach where each shell had come from. The end.
