في وقت النوم، قرأ بابا آخر حكاية، ثمّ أطفأ النور الكبير. فجأةً صارت الغرفة مظلمةً جدّاً، وبدت الخزانة مثل شكلٍ أسودَ كبير. همس مَجْد وهو يمسك لعبته، الديناصور ريكس، بقوّة: «بابا، أنا لا أحبّ الظلام.»
At bedtime, Baba read one last story and then switched off the big light. Suddenly the room was very dark. The wardrobe looked like a big black shape. "Baba, I don't like the dark," whispered Majd, holding his toy dinosaur, Rex, very tightly.
جلس بابا على السرير وقال: «أظنّ أنّ ريكس خائفٌ قليلاً أيضاً. هل تستطيع أن تساعده ليشعر بالشجاعة؟» فنظر مَجْد إلى وجه ريكس الصغير. نعم، كان يبدو قلقاً. فضمّه تحت ذقنه.
Baba sat down on the bed. "I think Rex might be a little scared too," he said. "Could you help him feel brave?" Majd looked at Rex's small plastic face. Yes, he did look worried. He held him close, right under his chin.
همس: «لا تخف يا ريكس. الظلام هو الليل حين يرتاح. سريرك ما زال هنا، والخزانة ما زالت خزانة، وبابا بجانبنا.» وبينما يقول ذلك، بدأ مَجْد يشعر بالشجاعة أيضاً، وكأنّ ريكس توقّف عن الارتجاف.
"Don't worry, Rex," he whispered. "The dark is just the night having a rest. Your bed is still here, the wardrobe is still a wardrobe, and Baba is right next to us." As he said it, Majd began to feel braver too. Rex seemed to stop shaking.
شغّل بابا الضوء الليليّ الصغير، فملأ الغرفةَ نورٌ ناعم، وقال: «ساعدت ريكس ليكون شجاعاً، وكنت شجاعاً أنت أيضاً.» فتدثّر مَجْد وريكس بجانبه، ولم يعد الظلام يبدو كبيراً. وبعد قليلٍ نام الاثنان نوماً عميقاً. النهاية.
Baba switched on the little night light, and a soft glow filled the room. "You helped Rex be brave," he said, "and you were brave too." Majd snuggled down with Rex beside him. The dark did not feel so big any more. Soon they were both fast asleep. The end.
