كلّ ليلةٍ كانت لولو الصغيرة تعارك البيجامة: تتلوّى وترفس وتبكي، وتحتاج ماما إلى أربع أيادٍ تقريباً لتلبسها. والليلة كانت الأسوأ: احمرّ وجه لولو وعلا صراخها، فسدّ مَجْد، وكان قد لبس بيجامته، أذنيه. ثمّ خطرت له فكرة.
Every night, baby Lulu fought her pyjamas. She wriggled and kicked and cried, and Mama needed about four hands to get her dressed. Tonight was the worst yet. Lulu was red-faced and howling, and Majd, already in his own pyjamas, covered his ears. Then he had an idea.
فاستلقى على البساط بجانب لولو، وشفط خدّيه وصنع وجه سمكة، يفتح فمه ويغلقه ببطءٍ شديد: بلوب، بلب، بلوب. فتوقّفت لولو في منتصف الصراخ وحدّقت في مَجْد، ثمّ أطلقت ضحكةً كبيرةً متفاجئة.
He lay down on the rug next to Lulu, sucked in his cheeks, and made a fish face, opening and closing his mouth very slowly. Bloop, blub, bloop. Lulu stopped mid-howl. She stared at Majd. Then she let out a huge, surprised giggle.
وتابع مَجْد: سمكة منتفخة بخدّين منفوخين، وسمكة ذهبيّة تنفخ الفقاعات، وقرشٌ كبيرٌ بأسنانٍ وهميّة. فضحكت لولو وضحكت، وبينما هي منشغلةٌ بالمشاهدة أدخلت ماما ذراعيها في الكمّين وأغلقت الأزرار: «انتهينا! هذا رقمٌ قياسيّ.»
Majd kept going: a pufferfish with puffed-up cheeks, a goldfish blowing bubbles, a big shark with pretend teeth. Lulu laughed and laughed, and while she was busy watching, Mama slipped her arms into the sleeves and did up the poppers. "Done!" said Mama. "That's a record."
وفيما بعد دثّرته ماما: «أنت أفضل سمكةٍ كبيرةٍ في البحر كلّه، هل تساعدني غداً أيضاً؟» فقال مَجْد يتثاءب تثاؤب سمكةٍ كبيراً: «كلّ ليلة.» ونفخت لولو من سريرها فقاعةً ناعسةً واحدة، فنام مَجْد ونامت لولو. النهاية.
Later, Mama tucked Majd in. "You're the best big fish in the whole sea," she said. "Will you help me again tomorrow?" "Every night," said Majd, yawning a huge fish yawn. From the cot, Lulu blew one sleepy bubble, and they both fell asleep. The end.
