The Garden at Night

Majd never went in the garden after dark. It looked so different at night: black bushes, rustling leaves, shadows everywhere. But tonight, Baba came to his room with a torch. "I want to show you a secret," he said. "Something in the garden that only happens at night."

Majd put on his slippers and held Baba's hand very tight. The back door creaked open. The air was cool and smelled of wet grass. Something rustled in the hedge, and Majd jumped. "Just the wind," said Baba gently. "Look over here."

He shone the torch on a tall plant by the fence. Its flowers were pale yellow, and they were opening, right in front of them, petal by petal. "Evening primrose," whispered Baba. "It waits for the dark to open, and then it smells sweetest." Majd leaned closer and breathed in. Honey and lemon.

"The dark isn't empty," said Baba. "It's full of things that are waiting for it." Back inside, Majd told Mama all about the secret flowers. Then Baba tucked him in. "Can we go out again tomorrow night?" he asked. "Every night you like," said Baba. The end.
