كانت لينا تحبّ وقت الحمّام إلّا نهايته؛ حين تسحب ماما السدّادة يصدر الماء صوتاً مخيفاً: قرقرةً عميقةً كأنّ شيئاً ضخماً يشربه كلّه، فتقفز لينا خارجاً بأسرع ما تستطيع. والليلة سألت: «ما الذي هناك في الأسفل؟»
Lina loved bath time, except for the very end. When Mama pulled out the plug, the water made a terrible noise: a deep, slurping gurgle, like something enormous drinking it all up. Lina always jumped out as fast as she could. Tonight she asked, "What's down there?"
فلفّتها ماما بالمنشفة وجثتا معاً قرب الحوض، وقالت: «أنابيب فقط، أنابيب طويلةٌ ملتوية. ينزل فيها الماء ثمّ يمرّ تحت الشارع ويمضي بعيداً، حتّى يصل بعضه يوماً إلى النهر، ثمّ إلى البحر.»
Mama wrapped her in a towel and they knelt by the bath together. "Just pipes," she said. "Long, twisty pipes. The water goes down them, then under the street, and on and on, until one day some of it reaches the river, and then the sea."
فسألت لينا: «إذن القرقرة هي الماء ذاهباً في رحلة؟» قالت ماما: «بالضبط، والصوت مجرّد فقاعات هواءٍ تفسح الطريق.» فراقبت لينا آخر دوّامةٍ تختفي، فقرقرت؛ لم يعد الصوت مخيفاً جدّاً. وقالت: «مع السلامة يا ماء.»
"So the gurgle is the water going on a trip?" asked Lina. "Exactly," said Mama. "And the noise is just air bubbles pushing out of the way." Lina watched the last swirl disappear. Gurgle-glug. It didn't sound so scary now. "Bye, water," she said.
وفي البيجامة حكت لينا لبابا عن رحلة الماء إلى البحر، ثمّ دثّرتها ماما وقالت: «غداً تسحبين أنت السدّادة.» فابتسمت لينا، ونامت تتخيّل ماء الحمّام يبحر حتّى المحيط. النهاية.
In pyjamas, Lina told Baba all about the water's journey to the sea. Then Mama tucked her in. "Tomorrow night, you can pull the plug," she said. Lina smiled. She fell asleep imagining the bathwater sailing all the way to the ocean. The end.
