The Garden at Night

Majd had always been a bit nervous of the garden after dark. In daylight it was his favourite place, but at night it turned into something else: shapes that might be bushes or might not, sounds that came from nowhere, the far end disappearing into blackness. So when Baba suggested a night walk round the garden after dinner, Majd said no straight away. "I'll show you something you've never seen," said Baba. "Something you can only see in the dark. Ten minutes. And you can hold the torch."

Holding the torch made a difference. Majd pointed it everywhere, checking each shape: the bench, the bird feeder, the old wheelbarrow. All just themselves. Then Baba asked him to switch it off. "Really?" "Trust me. Count to sixty." Majd's heart thumped, but he did it. In the dark, his eyes slowly adjusted. The garden came back, silver-grey under the moon. And then he noticed it: at the end of the path, a cluster of white flowers was glowing, almost shining, as though lit from inside.

"Night-scented stock and white tobacco flowers," whispered Baba. "White flowers catch even the tiniest bit of moonlight. They're designed for the dark, so that moths can find them." As they got closer, the scent hit them: sweet and spicy, much stronger than in the day. And there, hovering at one of the flowers, was a large, soft brown moth with feathery antennae, drinking nectar. Majd held his breath. A whole secret world was carrying on out here, every night, while he was asleep, and it wasn't scary at all. It was beautiful.

They stayed much longer than ten minutes. Back inside, Majd talked non-stop. Mama listened to the whole story while Baba made cocoa. At bedtime, Majd asked if he could leave the curtains open a little, so he could see the garden. "I thought the dark was empty," he said as Baba tucked him in. "But it's just busy with different things." "Most things we're scared of are just things we haven't met yet," said Baba. Majd fell asleep imagining the white flowers glowing, and the moth drinking quietly. The end.
