A Flower for the Teacher

Tomorrow was Majd's first day at nursery, and he was worried about meeting the teacher. "What if I can't say anything?" he asked Mama after dinner. "I go all quiet with new people." Mama thought for a moment. "Then let's give you something to say it for you."

They went into the garden with the torch. The roses by the fence were still blooming, and Mama let Majd choose one. He picked a soft pink rose that was just opening. Mama cut it carefully, took off the thorns, and wrapped the stem in damp kitchen paper and foil.

"When you arrive, just hold it out," said Mama. "You don't even have to say anything. The flower will say: Hello, I'm Majd, and I'm happy to meet you." Majd giggled. Then he practised holding the rose out to Teddy, and then to Mama, with a little smile.

The rose went into a jar of water by the front door, ready for tomorrow. Mama tucked Majd into bed. "Your flower will help you say hello," she said. "And after that, you'll find your own words." Majd fell asleep thinking about the pink rose waiting downstairs. The end.
