بعد أن أطفأت ماما النور الكبير رأته لينا: شكلٌ ضخمٌ مسنّنٌ يمتدّ على الحائط بأذرعٍ طويلةٍ رفيعةٍ تتحرّك. فشدّت اللحاف فوق رأسها ونادت، فعادت ماما فوراً: «ما بك يا حبيبتي؟» «هناك شيءٌ على الحائط!»
After Mama switched off the big light, Lina saw it: a huge, spiky shape stretching across the wall, with long thin arms that moved. She pulled the duvet over her head and called out. Mama came straight back. "What is it, love?" "There's something on the wall!"
فنظرت ماما إلى الحائط، ثمّ إلى النافذة: على الحافّة نبتة العنكبوت، هديّة عيد ميلاد لينا، أوراقها الطويلة متدلّية، ومن خلفها ضوء الشارع يتسلّل من فرجة الستارة. قالت ماما: «انظري.» ولمست إحدى الأوراق بلطف، فاهتزّت على الحائط إحدى الأذرع الطويلة.
Mama looked at the wall, then at the window. On the sill sat the spider plant Lina had been given for her birthday, its long leaves dangling down. Behind it, the streetlight was shining through the gap in the curtains. "Watch this," said Mama. She gently touched one of the leaves. On the wall, one of the long arms wiggled.
فأطلّت لينا من تحت اللحاف: «إنّها نبتتي؟» قالت ماما: «إنّها نبتتك. النباتات تصنع ظلالاً أيضاً. هل تجرّبين؟» فخرجت لينا وهزّت ورقة، فاهتزّ الظلّ، ثمّ صنعت أرنباً بأصابعها بجانب النبتة، فصار في الغابة أرنب.
Lina peeped out from under the duvet. "It's my plant?" "It's your plant," said Mama. "Plants make shadows too. Want to try?" Lina climbed out and wiggled a leaf. The shadow wiggled. She made a rabbit with her fingers beside the plant, and now there was a rabbit in the jungle.
ولعبا لعبة غابة الظلال بضع دقائق حتّى بدأت لينا تتثاءب، وقالت: «لم يعد شكلاً مخيفاً، صار غابةً فيها أرنب.» فدثّرتها ماما من جديد، وظلّت لينا تنظر إلى أوراق الظلّ على الحائط حتّى أغمضت عينيها، ونامت في غابتها الصغيرة. النهاية.
They played shadow jungle for a few minutes, until Lina was yawning. "Now it's not a scary shape," she said. "It's a jungle with a rabbit in it." Mama tucked her back in. Lina looked at the shadow leaves on the wall until her eyes closed, and fell asleep in her own little jungle. The end.
