عاد الطفل يوسف من المستشفى ذلك اليوم، وامتلأ البيت بالبطاقات والبالونات والأزهار من الزوّار. فنظر مَجْد إلى الباقات الكبيرة وشعر بأنّه صغير، وقال لماما بعد العشاء: «الجميع أحضروا له شيئاً، وليس عندي ما أعطيه.»
Baby Yusuf had come home from the hospital that day, and the house was full of cards, balloons and flowers from visitors. Majd looked at all the big bouquets and felt a bit small. "Everyone brought him something," he said to Mama after dinner. "I haven't got anything to give him."
قالت ماما: «تستطيع أن تعطيه زهرةً من حديقتنا، شيئاً لا يستطيع غيرك أن يعطيه.» فخرجا بالمصباح، وتأمّل مَجْد كلّ زهرةٍ بعناية، واختار أقحوانةً بيضاء صغيرةً قلبها أصفر، بحجمٍ مناسبٍ لطفلٍ تماماً.
"You could give him a flower from our own garden," said Mama. "Something nobody else could give." They went outside with the torch. Majd looked at every flower carefully and chose one small white daisy with a yellow middle, just the right size for a baby.
وفي الداخل ملأت ماما كأس بيضٍ بالماء، ووضع مَجْد الأقحوانة فيه، ثمّ وضعاها على الرفّ قرب سرير يوسف حيث يستطيع أن يراها. قالت ماما: «الأزهار الكبيرة من الزوّار، وهذه من العائلة.»
Inside, Mama filled an egg cup with water, and Majd put the daisy in it. They set it on the shelf by Yusuf's cot, where he could see it. "The big flowers are from visitors," said Mama. "This one is from family."
كان يوسف نائماً وأصابعه الصغيرة مضمومة، فهمس مَجْد: «تصبح على خير، هذه منّي.» ثمّ أخذت ماما مَجْد إلى السرير، وقرأت حكاية، ودثّرته، فنام وهو يشعر بأنّه أخٌ كبيرٌ حقّاً. النهاية.
Yusuf was asleep, his tiny fingers curled. Majd whispered, "Goodnight. That's from me." Then Mama took Majd to bed, read a story, and tucked him in. He fell asleep feeling like a real big brother. The end.
