The Shadow on the Wall

The new bedroom was bigger than Lina's old one, and the streetlight outside shone through the thin curtains at a different angle. On the third night there, she woke around eleven and froze. Across the wall above the wardrobe stretched a huge dark shape, ragged and branching, with a cluster of long fingers at the top that swayed slowly back and forth. She lay completely still, too scared even to call out, watching it move. Eventually she managed a whisper, then a proper shout. Baba arrived in seconds, switching on the landing light.

In the light, the shape vanished. Lina explained, a bit embarrassed, and Baba didn't laugh. Instead he switched the landing light off again and sat on the bed beside her. "Let's investigate," he said. "Like scientists. What could make a shadow that shape?" They waited, and the shape reappeared. Baba followed the line from the shadow to the window. Outside, in the front garden, stood the tall old sunflower plants Mama had grown against the fence, taller than Baba, their huge heads drooping now that autumn was coming, their leaves ragged. The streetlight was right behind them.

"That's the big flower head," said Baba, pointing. "And those are the leaves, and the stalks. When the wind blows, they sway, so the shadow sways." Lina went to the window and looked out. There they were, nodding gently in the breeze, completely harmless. She watched the shadow on the wall move in time with them. It was strange how something so ordinary could look so frightening, just because she couldn't see what it was. "It's like a magic trick," she said slowly. "Once you know how it works, it isn't scary any more."

"Exactly," said Baba. "And if you see another one, you can do what we just did: wait, look, follow the line back to whatever's making it." He offered to pin the curtains more tightly, but Lina shook her head. "I want to keep watching it," she said. "Now that I know it's the sunflowers." Baba tucked her in and went back to bed. Lina lay watching the great shadow nodding on the wall, like a giant flower saying goodnight, until her eyes grew heavy and she drifted back to sleep. The end.
