Sniff, Don't Grab

تعلّمت الطفلة لولو الحبو للتوّ، وصارت تريد أن تلمس كلّ شيء. وفي ذلك المساء، بينما كانت ماما تطوي الغسيل، تشبّثت لولو بطاولة القهوة وقامت، وأمسكت الورود في المزهريّة، فتناثرت البتلات في كلّ مكان، وبدت لولو متفاجئةً جدّاً. فتنهّدت لينا: «إنّها تكسر كلّ الأزهار.»

Baby Lulu had just learned to crawl, and she wanted to touch everything. That evening, while Mama was folding washing, Lulu pulled herself up at the coffee table and grabbed the roses in the vase. Petals scattered everywhere. Lulu looked very surprised. Lina sighed. "She breaks all the flowers."

قالت ماما: «لا تعرف بعد كيف تستمتع بها، والأطفال يتعلّمون بالتقليد. ربّما تستطيعين أن تريها.» فالتقطت لينا وردةً بقيت كاملة، وجلست على البساط مقابل لولو، وقرّبت الوردة من أنفها وأخذت شمّةً طويلةً بطيئة: «ممم.»

"She doesn't know how to enjoy them yet," said Mama. "Babies learn by copying. Maybe you could show her." Lina picked up one rose that was still whole. She sat on the rug opposite Lulu, held the rose under her own nose, and took a long, slow sniff. "Mmm."

فراقبت لولو بعينين واسعتين، وقرّبت لينا الوردة من وجهها ويدها حول الساق، فمالت لولو إلى الأمام وجعّدت أنفها وشمّت بصوتٍ مضحك، ثمّ ضحكت وأعادتها. فضحكت لينا أيضاً، وبقيت الوردة كاملة.

Lulu watched with big eyes. Lina held the rose near her face, keeping her hand round the stem. Lulu leaned forward, scrunched up her nose, and made a funny snorting sniff. Then she laughed and did it again. Lina laughed too. The rose stayed whole.

وحين حان وقت النوم وضعت ماما الوردة في مزهريّةٍ صغيرةٍ عالياً على رفّ لينا وقالت: «لأفضل معلّمةٍ في البيت.» ودثّرتها، فكانت رائحة الوردة تصل إلى وسادتها، وسرعان ما نامت. النهاية.

When it was bedtime, Mama put the rose in a small vase high on Lina's shelf. "For the best teacher in the house," she said, and tucked her in. Lina could smell the rose from her pillow, and soon she was asleep. The end.

خصّصوا كلّ يومٍ وقتاً قصيراً لطفلكم الأكبر وحده معكم.
أعطوه مهمّاتٍ حقيقيّة، مثل اختيار جوارب المولود أو الغناء له.
المشاعر المختلطة طبيعيّة. دعوا طفلكم يقول «أشتاق إلى الوقت الذي كنتُ فيه وحدي» دون أن تلوموه.

Keep a little special time each day with your older child, just the two of you.
Give real helper jobs, like choosing the baby's socks or singing to them.
Mixed feelings are normal. Let your child say "I miss when it was just me" without telling them off.
