في ذلك المساء سقت لينا مع ماما نباتات حافّة النافذة قبل النوم، ثمّ غفت تحت اللحاف الدافئ وحلمت. وفي الحلم كانت واقفةً في حديقةٍ مقمرةٍ مليئةٍ بالأزهار، كلّها فضّيّةٌ وزرقاء في الليل.
That evening, Lina watered the plants on the windowsill with Mama before bed. Then, snug under the duvet, she drifted into a dream. In the dream, she was standing in a moonlit garden full of flowers, all of them silver and blue in the night.
وفي الزاوية زهرةٌ صغيرةٌ منحنية، بتلاتها مغلقةٌ بإحكام. سألت لينا: «ما بك؟» فهمست الزهرة: «لا أحد يسقيني. أنا مختبئةٌ خلف الشجيرة الكبيرة، والجميع ينسون أنّي هنا.» فتلفّتت لينا ولمحت مرشّةً صغيرةً من الصفيح قرب البوّابة.
In the corner, one little flower was bent over, its petals tightly shut. "What's wrong?" asked Lina. "Nobody waters me," the flower whispered. "I'm hidden behind the big bush, and everyone forgets I'm here." Lina looked around and spotted a little tin watering can by the gate.
فملأتها من النافورة وسكبت الماء البارد بعنايةٍ حول جذور الزهرة الصغيرة. فرفعت الزهرة رأسها ببطء، وتفتّحت بتلاتها واحدةً بعد واحدة، وكانت أشدّ الأزهار ورديّةً في الحديقة كلّها، وقالت: «شكراً لك. هل ستعودين؟»
She filled it at the fountain and carefully poured the cool water around the little flower's roots. Slowly, the flower lifted its head. Its petals opened, one by one, and they were the brightest pink in the whole garden. "Thank you," it said. "Will you come back?"
فوعدت لينا: «كلّ ليلة.» وتلاشى الحلم، وغاصت لينا أعمق في وسادتها. وحين أطلّت ماما لاحقاً رأتها تبتسم، فشدّت اللحاف حتّى ذقنها وهمست: «أحلاماً سعيدة يا بستانيّتي الصغيرة.» النهاية.
"Every night," promised Lina. The dream faded, and Lina snuggled deeper into her pillow. When Mama looked in later, she saw her smiling. She tucked the duvet up to her chin and whispered, "Sweet dreams, my little gardener." The end.
