قصة قبل النوم للبنات عن الصبر والانتظار، لكلّ بنتٍ تحبّ الأزهارَ والفراشات

كان بابا يزرع على الشرفة نبتةً متسلّقةً اسمها زهرة القمر، أوراقها كبيرةٌ على شكل قلب، وقال إنّ أحد براعمها سيتفتّح الليلة، وشرح: «زهرة القمر لا تتفتّح إلّا في المساء، وتستطيعين أن تريها وهي تتفتّح إن صبرتِ.» فلبست لينا رداءها وجلست على درجة الشرفة.

On the balcony, Baba grew a climbing plant called a moonflower. It had big heart-shaped leaves, and tonight, he said, one of its buds was going to open. "Moonflowers only open in the evening," he explained. "And you can watch it happen, if you're patient." Lina pulled on her dressing gown and sat on the balcony step.

كان البرعم طويلاً أبيض، ملتفّاً بإحكامٍ مثل مظلّةٍ مغلقة، فحدّقت لينا في البرعم، فلم يحدث شيء، فحدّقت أكثر، ولا شيء. وسألت: «هل هو معطّل؟» قال بابا وهو يجلس بجانبها ومعه كوبا حليبٍ دافئ: «بطيءٌ فقط، تابعي النظر.»

The bud was long and white, twisted tight like a closed umbrella. Lina stared at it. Nothing happened. She stared harder. Still nothing. "Is it broken?" she asked. "Just slow," said Baba, sitting beside her with two cups of warm milk. "Keep watching."

ثمّ ارتعش البرعم ارتعاشةً صغيرة، وبدأ الالتفاف يرتخي ببطءٍ شديد، فظهر شقٌّ أبيض ثمّ اتّسع، وشيئاً فشيئاً انبسطت الزهرة حتّى صارت دائرةً بيضاء كبيرةً مستديرةً متوهّجة، مثل قمرٍ صغير، وفاحت رائحةٌ حلوةٌ على الشرفة.

Then the bud gave a tiny shiver. The twist began to loosen, very slowly. A crack of white appeared, then widened. Bit by bit, the flower unfurled, until it was a big, round, glowing white circle, like a little moon. A sweet smell drifted across the balcony.

همست لينا: «رأيتها تتفتّح!» قال بابا: «لأنّك انتظرتِ. لو دخلتِ لما رأيتِها إلّا متفتّحة، أمّا أنت فرأيت الجزء السحريّ.» ثمّ حملها إلى السرير ودثّرها، فنامت لينا وهي تفكّر في القمر الأبيض الصغير على الشرفة. النهاية.

"I saw it open!" breathed Lina. "Because you waited," said Baba. "If you'd gone inside, you'd only have seen it already open. You saw the magic part." Then he carried Lina to bed and tucked her in, and Lina fell asleep thinking of the little white moon on the balcony. The end.
