كانت ليلةً عاصفة. وكانت لينا على وشك النوم، تعانق لعبتها، الديناصور دينو، حين جاء صوتٌ من النافذة: طق... تك... خرخشة. فجلست وقلبها يدقّ بسرعة، وهمست: «من هناك؟» ولم يُجب أحد.
It was a windy night. Lina was almost asleep, cuddling her toy dinosaur, Dino, when a sound came from the window. Tap... tick... scratch. She sat up, her heart thumping. "Who's there?" she whispered. Nobody answered.
نادت لينا: «ماما!» فجاءت ماما وجلست على السرير: «ما بك يا حبيبتي؟» فأشارت لينا إلى الستائر: «شيءٌ ما يطرق.» فأصغت ماما وقالت: «هل نكون شجعاناً معاً ونكتشف ما هو؟» ومدّت يدها.
"Mama!" Lina called. Mama came in and sat on the bed. "What's wrong, my love?" Lina pointed at the curtains. "Something is tapping." Mama listened. "Shall we be brave together and find out what it is?" she asked, holding out her hand.
فأمسكت لينا يد ماما بيد، ودينو باليد الأخرى. وببطء، فتحت ماما الستائر؛ فإذا غصنٌ رفيعٌ من شجرة الليمون يتمايل في الريح، ويطرق الزجاج برفق. فضحكت لينا: «إنّها الشجرة تقول تصبحون على خير!»
Lina held Mama's hand in one hand and Dino in the other. Slowly, Mama opened the curtains. Outside, a thin branch of the lemon tree was swaying in the wind, tapping gently on the glass. "It's just the tree saying goodnight!" laughed Lina.
ثمّ أغلقت ماما الستائر، وأعادتها مع دينو تحت البطانيّة وقالت: «كانت نظرتك شجاعة.» واستمرّ الغصن يطرق، لكنّه صار يبدو مثل أغنية نومٍ هادئة. فتثاءبت لينا وابتسمت ونامت. النهاية.
Mama closed the curtains and tucked Lina and Dino back under the blanket. "You were brave to look," she said. The branch went on tapping, but now it sounded like a gentle lullaby. Lina yawned, smiled and fell asleep. The end.
