بعد العشاء لعبت لينا مع سامي في الحديقة ما دام في السماء بعض الضوء. وقطفت لينا أقحواناً وحوذاناً وزهرة برسيمٍ بنفسجيّةً لماما حتّى صارت عندها باقةٌ صغيرةٌ جميلة. وكانت أمّ سامي ستأتي لتأخذه قريباً، لكنّ يديه فارغتان.
After dinner, Lina and cousin Sami played in the garden while it was still light enough to see. Lina picked daisies, buttercups and one purple clover for Mama, until she had a lovely little bunch. Sami's mama was coming to collect him soon, but his hands were empty.
قال سامي بصوتٍ خافت: «لم أقطف شيئاً، كنت مشغولاً باللعب.» وكانت الحديقة قد أظلمت تقريباً. فنظرت لينا إلى أزهارها؛ أخذ جمعها وقتاً طويلاً، لكنّ سامي بدا خائب الأمل جدّاً.
"I didn't pick any," said Sami in a small voice. "I was busy playing." The garden was almost dark now. Lina looked at her flowers. It had taken ages to find them all. But Sami looked so disappointed.
فجلست لينا على الدرجة وقسمت الباقة بعنايةٍ نصفين: نصف الأقحوان ونصف الحوذان. ولم تكن هناك إلّا زهرة برسيمٍ واحدة، ففكّرت لحظةً ثمّ أعطتها لسامي: «لتأخذ أمّك الزهرة المميّزة.» وربطا كلّ باقةٍ بعودٍ من العشب.
Lina sat down on the step and carefully divided the bunch into two: half the daisies, half the buttercups. There was only one clover. She thought for a moment, then gave it to Sami. "Your mama can have the special one," she said. They tied each bunch with a bit of grass.
وحين وصلت أمّ سامي أعطاها الأزهار فضمّته بقوّة، ثمّ أعطت لينا ماما نصفها. وقالت ماما لاحقاً وهي تدثّرها: «باقتان أجمل من باقة. شاركتِ أزهارك ولطفك.» فنامت لينا مبتسمةً. النهاية.
When Sami's mama arrived, he gave her the flowers, and she hugged him tight. Then Lina gave Mama her half. "Two bunches are better than one," said Mama, tucking her into bed later. "You shared your flowers and your kindness." Lina fell asleep smiling. The end.
