حين أطفأت ماما المصباح، صارت الغرفة مظلمةً جدّاً، فأمسكت لينا كمّها: «لا تذهبي! لا أحبّ ألّا أرى شيئاً.» فجلست ماما من جديد وقالت بلطف: «الظلام يبدو كبيراً، أليس كذلك؟»
When Mama turned off the lamp, the room went very dark, and Lina grabbed her sleeve. "Don't go! I don't like it when I can't see anything." Mama sat back down. "The dark feels big, doesn't it?" she said gently.
ثمّ خطرت لها فكرة؛ رفعت طرف اللحاف كأنّه قوس وقالت: «هذا نفق سكّة. القطارات الحقيقيّة تعبر الأنفاق كلّ يوم. الداخل مظلم، لكنّها تواصل السير لأنّها تعرف أنّ له نهاية.»
Then she had an idea. She lifted the end of the duvet and held it up like an arch. "This is a railway tunnel," she said. "Real trains go through tunnels every day. It's dark inside, but they keep going, because they know there's an end."
فأمسكت لينا قطارها الصغير وزحفت إلى النفق. كان الداخل مظلماً ودافئاً، ورائحته رائحة الشراشف النظيفة. ونادت: «توت! أنا في المنتصف!» ثمّ رأت وجه ماما يبتسم عند الطرف الآخر، فخرجت تتلوّى.
Lina held her little train and crawled into the tunnel. It was dark under there, and warm, and it smelled of clean sheets. "Toot!" she called. "I'm in the middle!" Then she saw Mama's face smiling at the other end, and wriggled out.
وكرّرا ذلك ثلاث مرّاتٍ أخرى. وبعدها صارت الغرفة المظلمة مثل نفقٍ آخر، دافئةً آمنة، وماما قريبة. فدثّرتها وهمست: «يا قاطرتي الشجاعة.» فابتسمت لينا ونامت. النهاية.
They did it three more times. After that, the dark room felt like just another tunnel, cosy and safe, with Mama nearby. She tucked Lina in. "Brave little engine," she whispered. Lina smiled and fell asleep. The end.
