بعد أن أطفأت ماما الضوء استلقت لينا تتأمّل الغرفة، فإذا شيءٌ على ظهر الباب يجمّدها في مكانها: طويل، بذراعين طويلتين متدلّيتين وجسمٍ داكنٍ كبير، كأنّه شخصٌ واقفٌ بلا حراك. فسحبت لينا اللحاف ونادت: «ماما!»
After Mama turned off the light, Lina lay in bed looking around the room. Something on the back of the door made her freeze. It was tall, with long floppy arms and a big dark body. It looked like someone standing very still. Lina pulled the duvet up. "Mama!" she called.
فعادت ماما فوراً: «ما الأمر؟» فأشارت لينا إلى الباب. لم تشعل ماما الضوء الكبير، بل قالت: «لننظر إليه معاً، هل نذهب يداً بيد؟» فمشتا إليه ببطء، وتركت ماما لينا تلمسه.
Mama came straight back. "What is it?" Lina pointed at the door. Mama didn't switch on the big light. Instead, she said, "Let's look at it together. Do you want to hold my hand?" They walked over slowly, and Mama let Lina touch it.
كان ناعماً؛ إنّه قميص الكرة الخاصّ بلينا، معلّقاً على المشجب وكمّاه متدلّيان. فضحكت لينا حتّى جلست على الأرض: «قميصي كان يتظاهر بأنّه شخص!» وضحكت ماما أيضاً.
The shape was soft. It was Lina's football shirt, hanging on the hook with the sleeves dangling down. Lina laughed so hard she had to sit on the floor. "My shirt was pretending to be a person!" Mama laughed too.
فطوتا القميص ووضعتاه على الكرسيّ جاهزاً للغد، ودثّرتها ماما من جديد وقالت: «في المرّة القادمة انظري جيّداً أوّلاً، فمعظم الأشكال المخيفة مجرّد أشياء.» فنظرت لينا إلى الباب الفارغ الآن وابتسمت، وسرعان ما نامت. النهاية.
They folded the shirt and put it on the chair, ready for tomorrow. Mama tucked Lina back in. "Next time, look closely first," she said. "Most scary shapes are just things." Lina looked at the door, now empty, and smiled. Soon she was asleep. The end.
