كان البيت هادئاً مظلماً حين سمعت لينا الصوت: خربشةً في أسفل باب الغرفة، ثمّ دقّةً خفيفة. فتجمّدت لينا تحت البطانيّة، وعاد الصوت، فهمست بأعلى ما تجرؤ: «ماما، هناك شيءٌ عند بابي!»
The house was quiet and dark when Lina heard it: a scratchy scraping at the bottom of the bedroom door. Then a soft thump. Lina froze under the blanket. The noise came again. "Mama," she whispered as loudly as she dared. "Something's at my door!"
فجاءت ماما في الممرّ بضوء هاتفها وقالت: «لنكتشف معاً. هل تفتحين الباب أم أفتحه أنا؟» فأخذت لينا نفساً عميقاً وقالت: «معاً.» وأمسكا المقبض، وعدّا إلى ثلاثة، وسحبا.
Mama came along the hallway with her phone light. "Let's find out together," she said. "Do you want to open the door, or shall I?" Lina took a deep breath. "Together," she said. They held the handle, counted to three, and pulled.
وهناك، على الحصيرة، جلست القطّة مشمش وذيلها ملتفٌّ حول قوائمها، وقالت بضيق: «مياو»، كأنّها تسأل لماذا تأخّرا. ثمّ دخلت بخطواتٍ سريعة، وقفزت إلى السرير، وبدأت تعجن البطانيّة بقوائمها.
There, sitting on the mat with her tail curled around her paws, was Mishmish the cat. "Meow," she said crossly, as if to ask what had taken so long. Then she trotted in, jumped onto the bed and started kneading the blanket.
فضحكت لينا مرتاحةً. ودثّرتها ماما ومشمش تخرخر عند قدميها، وقالت: «كنتِ خائفةً، لكنّك فتحتِ الباب مع ذلك. هذا معنى الشجاعة.» فمسحت لينا على فرو مشمش الناعم، وبعد قليلٍ نامت. النهاية.
Lina laughed with relief. Mama tucked her in, with Mishmish purring at her feet. "You were scared, but you opened the door anyway," she said. "That's what brave means." Lina stroked Mishmish's soft fur and soon fell asleep. The end.
