The bedroom looked as if a hurricane had passed through a toy shop. After a long evening of building forts, drawing and dressing up, the floor had disappeared under a thick layer of everything: felt-tip pens, cushions, a cardboard castle, two capes, a whole zoo of soft animals and roughly a thousand beads. Mama stood in the doorway with her arms folded. "Pyjamas in ten minutes," she said, "and I need to be able to see the carpet." Majd surveyed the scene with despair. "It would take a crane to clear this lot."
