كانت أرض غرفة مَجْد مغطّاةً بالألعاب: مكعّبات، وأحاجٍ، وكراتٌ طريّة، ودببة. ووقت النوم نظر إلى الفوضى وارتمى على السرير متأوّهاً: «سيستغرق هذا دهراً، أنا متعب جدّاً.»
Majd's bedroom floor was covered in toys: blocks, puzzles, soft balls and teddies. At bedtime, he looked at the mess and flopped onto the bed. "It'll take forever," he groaned. "I'm too tired."
فدخل بابا ودفع صندوق الألعاب إلى الحائط، ووقف أمامه فاتحاً ذراعيه: «أنا حارس المرمى، لنرَ هل يمرّ منّي شيء.» فجلس مَجْد، والتقط كرةً طريّةً ورماها، فارتمى بابا في الاتّجاه الخطأ: هدف!
Baba came in and pushed the toy box against the wall. He stood in front of it with his arms out. "I'm the goalkeeper," he said. "Let's see if you can get anything past me." Majd sat up. He picked up a soft ball and threw it. Baba dived the wrong way. Goal!
ثمّ دبدوب: هدف! ثمّ علبة أحجية: صدّها! لكنّ مَجْد التقطها وحاول من جديد: هدف! وكان بابا يتظاهر بالانزعاج الشديد كلّ مرّة، فضحك مَجْد كثيراً حتّى كاد لا يلاحظ الأرض تصفو شيئاً فشيئاً، حتّى فرغت تماماً.
Then a teddy. Goal! A puzzle box. Saved! But Majd picked it up and tried again. Goal! Baba pretended to be very upset each time. Majd laughed so much that he hardly noticed the floor getting clearer and clearer, until it was completely empty.
قال بابا: «النتيجة النهائيّة: مَجْد عشرة، وبابا صفر.» وجاءت ماما ترى الغرفة المرتّبة: «من فاز؟» فقال مَجْد: «أنا!» فدثّرت ماما الفائز في السرير وأطفأت الضوء. النهاية.
"Final score: Majd ten, Baba nil," said Baba. Mama came in to see the tidy room. "Who won?" she asked. "Me!" said Majd. Mama tucked the winner into bed and turned off the light. The end.
