دخل بابا ليقرأ قصّة النوم، فصاح فجأة: «آخ!» وقفز في الغرفة ممسكاً قدمه؛ لقد داس على قطعة سكّةٍ منحنيةٍ مخبّأةٍ في السجّادة. وكانت الأرض كلّها مغطّاةً بالسكك: قطعٌ مستقيمة، وقطعٌ منحنية، وجسران.
Baba came in to read the bedtime story and suddenly yelped, "OUCH!" He hopped across the room holding one foot. He had stepped right on a curved piece of train track, hidden in the rug. The whole floor was covered in track: straight bits, curved bits and two bridges.
فضحكت لينا من قفز بابا، ثمّ رأت وجهه فسألت: «هل قدمك بخير؟» ففرك بابا قدمه: «قليلاً. قطع السكّة ماكرةٌ في الليل.» فشعرت لينا بالأسف؛ فقد طُلب منها الترتيب قبل الحمّام، لكنّها نسيت.
Lina giggled at Baba's hopping, then saw his face. "Is your foot okay?" Baba rubbed his foot. "A little. Track pieces are sneaky at night." Lina felt bad. She had been asked to tidy before bath, and had forgotten.
وقالت: «سأصلح ذلك.» وفكّت كلّ قطعةٍ وهي تعدّ: المستقيمة في كومة، والمنحنية في أخرى، والجسران فوقها. وأمسك بابا العلبة. أربع وعشرون قطعةً في المجموع، ودخلت كلّها بأمان.
"I'll fix it," she said. She unclipped each piece and counted as she went: straight ones in one pile, curved ones in another, bridges on top. Baba helped hold the box. Twenty-four pieces in all, and every one went safely inside.
ومشى بابا على أطراف أصابعه كأنّه يبحث عن فخاخ، ثمّ قال: «الطريق آمن!» وقرأ القصّة ودثّرها وقال: «شكراً لأنّك حميتِ أقدامنا.» فابتسمت لينا ونامت في غرفةٍ مرتّبة. النهاية.
Baba walked across the floor on tiptoe, pretending to check for traps. "All clear!" he said, and then he read the story and tucked Lina in. "Thank you for keeping our feet safe." Lina smiled and fell asleep in a tidy room. The end.
