A bedtime routine for kids aged 2 to 8: simple steps for calmer nights

A bedtime routine for kids aged 2 to 8: simple steps for calmer nights

Why a routine helps

Children like knowing what comes next. When the same steps happen every evening in the same order, a child's body and mind learn that sleep is near, so there are fewer battles and calmer nights for everyone.

How much sleep does my child need?

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommends per 24 hours including naps: 11 to 14 hours for ages 1 to 2, 10 to 13 hours for ages 3 to 5, and 9 to 12 hours for ages 6 to 12. If your child wakes at 6:30 for nursery or school, count back from there.

A five-step routine

1. A light dinner well before bed. 2. A warm bath, or washing face and teeth. 3. Pyjamas, screens off and lights down. 4. A short story in bed with a quiet cuddle. 5. The same goodnight words every night, then lights out.

Keep the whole routine to 20 to 40 minutes. Toddlers (2 and 3) need a shorter routine and a story of just a few pages; older children enjoy a longer story and a short chat about their day.

The role of the bedtime story

A story carries a child from play to calm, brings you close and builds language. It works best when it is short, warm and ends in bed, and when the child sees themselves in it: their name, the things they love and the language of home.

When your child resists bedtime

Offer small choices: which pyjamas, which story? It gives a feeling of control without delaying sleep. If they call out after lights out, answer calmly and briefly, and don't restart the routine. Consistency matters more than perfection: one hard night doesn't mean the routine failed.
