Lina had spent the whole evening building the most ambitious railway of her life: forty-two pieces of track, three bridges, a level crossing and a spiral that climbed onto the bed. It was magnificent. It was also, at bedtime, still there. Mama had mentioned tidying twice, and Lina had said "in a minute" twice. Then Baba came in with the story book, took one step into the dark room, and let out a yell that probably woke the neighbours. He had stood, barefoot and full weight, on a curved piece of track.
