لعبت لينا بالقطار الجديد ذي البطّاريّة طوال المساء، وكان يدور على السكّة وأضواؤه تومض. ثمّ، قبل النوم بقليل، تباطأ... وتوقّف. فهزّته لينا، ولا شيء. فبكت: «انكسر!»
Lina had been playing with the new battery train all evening. It zoomed round the track with its lights flashing. Then, just before bed, it slowed down... and stopped. Lina shook it. Nothing. "It's broken!" she wailed.
ففحصته ماما وقالت: «لم ينكسر، البطّاريّة فارغة وتحتاج إلى الشحن.» ووصلت السلك، فأضاء ضوءٌ أحمر صغير. «حين يصير الضوء أخضر يكون جاهزاً، لكنّ ذلك يستغرق الليل كلّه.»
Mama checked it. "It's not broken. The battery is empty. It needs to charge." She plugged the cable in, and a tiny red light came on. "When the light turns green, it's ready. But that takes all night."
فتأوّهت لينا: «الليل كلّه؟ ألا أستطيع اللعب دقيقةً واحدة؟» فهزّت ماما رأسها: «إن فصلناه الآن لن تكفيه الطاقة. الانتظار هو ما يعيد إليه قوّته، مثلك حين تنامين.»
"All night?" Lina groaned. "Can't I play for one more minute?" Mama shook her head. "If we unplug it now, it won't have enough energy. Waiting is how it gets strong again. A bit like you, when you sleep."
فتنهّدت لينا، ثمّ قبّلت سقف القطار وهمست: «اشحن جيّداً.» فدثّرتها ماما، وتركت الضوء الأحمر الصغير مضاءً على الرفّ، فراقبته لينا حتّى أغمضت عينيها. والآن صار الاثنان يستعيدان طاقتهما. النهاية.
Lina sighed, then kissed the train's roof. "Charge well," she whispered. Mama tucked her in and left the little red light glowing on the shelf. Lina watched it until her eyes closed. Both of them were recharging now. The end.
