After football in the park with Baba, Lina ran into the house, kicking off her boots in the hall, dropping her socks on the stairs and leaving her muddy shirt on the landing. By the time she reached the bathroom, there was a long trail of football kit behind her.
Mama looked down the stairs and laughed. "I can see exactly where you've been," she said. "It's like a treasure trail. Let's follow it backwards before your bath." She handed Lina the washing basket. "Everything muddy goes in here."
Lina followed the trail down: shirt, socks, shin pads. Each thing went into the basket. The boots went on newspaper by the back door so the mud could dry. Then Lina helped Mama put everything in the washing machine and pressed the big button herself.
The washing machine began to hum. Mama ran a warm bath, and soon Lina was clean too, in soft pyjamas. "Next time, straight into the basket," said Mama, tucking her in. Lina nodded sleepily, listening to the machine. The end.
Talk about it together: Which toys will we put back first tomorrow?
