بعد القصّة دثّرتها ماما، ووضعت القطار الخشبيّ الصغير على الوسادة بجانبها وقالت: «أحلاماً سعيدة»، وأطفأت المصباح. فأمسكت لينا القطار وغفت في حلمٍ مليءٍ بالتلال والقضبان اللامعة.
After her story, Mama tucked Lina in and put the little wooden train on the pillow beside her. "Sweet dreams," she said, and switched off the lamp. Lina held the train and drifted into a dream full of hills and shining rails.
في الحلم، كان قاطرٌ أحمر صغيرٌ عالقاً في منتصف تلٍّ شديد الانحدار، وعجلاته تدور وتنزلق. وقال وهو ينفث: «أنا صغيرٌ جدّاً، لن أصل أبداً إلى المحطّة في الأعلى، وركّابي ينتظرون.»
In the dream, a tiny red engine was stuck halfway up a steep hill. Its wheels spun and slipped. "I'm too small," it puffed. "I'll never reach the station at the top, and my passengers are waiting."
لم تضحك لينا من القاطر الصغير، بل مشت بجانبه وقالت: «لستَ صغيراً جدّاً، أنت تحتاج إلى صديقٍ فقط.» ووضعت يديها على مؤخّرة القاطر ودفعت، والقاطر ينفث بكلّ قوّته، فصعدا معاً ببطء.
Lina didn't laugh at the little engine. She walked up beside it and said, "You're not too small. You just need a friend." She put both hands on the back of the engine and pushed, while the engine puffed as hard as it could. Slowly, they climbed together.
وفي القمّة هتف الركّاب، وأطلق القاطر صفيراً سعيداً وقال: «شكراً لأنّك ساعدتِني.» ثمّ صار الحلم ناعماً خافتاً، ونامت لينا بسلامٍ حتّى الصباح، والقطار الخشبيّ ما زال في يدها. النهاية.
At the top, the passengers cheered and the engine gave a happy whistle. "Thank you for helping me," it said. Then the dream grew soft and dim, and Lina slept peacefully until morning, the little wooden train still tucked in her hand. The end.
