قضت لينا وقتاً طويلاً في بناء سكّةٍ على السجّادة قبل النوم. ثمّ زحفت الصغيرة لولو، وأمسكت جسراً وشدّت. طاخ! انفكّ نصف السكّة. فصاحت لينا: «لولو! خرّبتِها!» فانفجرت لولو بالبكاء.
Lina had spent ages building a railway on the rug before bed. Then baby Lulu crawled over, grabbed a bridge and pulled. CRASH! Half the track fell apart. "Lulu! You ruined it!" Lina shouted, and Lulu burst into tears.
فحمل بابا لولو وقال: «لم تقصد التخريب، إنّها تراكِ تلعبين وتريد المشاركة، لكنّها لا تعرف كيف بعد.» فعقدت لينا ذراعيها: «إنّها صغيرةٌ جدّاً على القطارات.»
Baba picked Lulu up. "She's not trying to ruin it," he said. "She sees you playing and wants to join in. She just doesn't know how yet." Lina crossed her arms. "She's too little for trains."
ثمّ خطرت لها فكرة: بنت سكّةً صغيرةً منخفضةً للولو وحدها، بلا جسورٍ تُشدّ، وأعطتها العربة القماشيّة الطريّة التي لا تنكسر وقالت: «هذا خطّك يا لولو.» فدفعت لولو العربة وصرخت فرحاً.
Then she had an idea. She built a tiny, low track just for Lulu, with no bridges to pull, and gave her the soft fabric carriage that couldn't break. "This is your line, Lulu," she said. Lulu pushed the carriage and squealed with joy.
وبينما لعبت لولو على خطّها، أعادت لينا بناء الجسر. ولاحقاً دثّرها بابا وقال: «وجدتِ طريقةً لتلعبا معاً، وهذا ما تفعله الأخوات الكبيرات.» فابتسمت لينا؛ كانت ضحكة لولو أجمل صوتٍ في المساء كلّه. النهاية.
While Lulu played on her line, Lina rebuilt her bridge. Later Baba tucked Lina in. "You found a way for both of you to play," he said. "That's what big sisters do." Lina smiled. Lulu's giggle had been the best sound all evening. The end.
