اقترب وقت النوم، وأرض غرفة اللعب بحرٌ من الألعاب، ولم ترد لينا الترتيب. فقصّت ماما من الورق عينين كبيرتين وفماً واسعاً، وألصقتها على صندوق الألعاب وقالت: «يا إلهي، فرس النهر لم يتعشَّ بعد، وأفراس النهر جائعةٌ دائماً.»
Bedtime was close, but the playroom floor was a sea of toys, and Lina didn't want to tidy. So Mama cut two big eyes and a wide mouth from paper and taped them onto the toy box. "Oh no," she said. "Hippo hasn't had his dinner. And hippos are always hungry."
فضحكت لينا وأمسكت مكعّباً وأسقطته في فم فرس النهر، فقالت ماما بصوتٍ عميق: «هام! لذيذ! المزيد من فضلك!» فأطعمته لينا قطع أحجيةٍ وأقلام تلوينٍ وكرةً طريّة، وفي كلّ مرّةٍ يبتلعها ويطلب المزيد.
Lina giggled and picked up a block. She dropped it into the hippo's mouth. "Gulp!" said Mama in a deep hippo voice. "Delicious! More, please!" Lina fed him puzzle pieces, crayons and a soft ball. Each time, the hippo gulped and asked for more.
وقالت ماما: «لكنّ أفراس النهر لا تأكل الكتب، فمكانها الرفّ.» فأخذت لينا تفرز الأشياء: طعام فرس النهر في الصندوق، والكتب على الرفّ، والدبدوب على السرير. وبعد قليلٍ صارت الأرض نظيفةً تماماً.
"Hippos don't eat books, though," said Mama. "Books go on the shelf." So Lina sorted as she went: food for the hippo in the box, books on the shelf, and teddy on the bed. Before long, the floor was completely clear.
وقال فرس النهر متثائباً تثاؤباً كبيراً: «شبعت تماماً.» ودثّرتها ماما وقالت: «أطعمتِ فرس النهر ورتّبتِ الغرفة في الوقت نفسه.» فضحكت لينا بنعاس وأغمضت عينيها. النهاية.
"I'm so full," said the hippo with a big yawn. Mama tucked Lina into bed. "You fed the hippo and tidied the room at the same time," she said. Lina laughed sleepily and closed her eyes. The end.
