The new electric engine was the best present Lina had ever been given: sleek and silver, with front lamps that shone along the track and a horn that played two notes. She had raced it round and round the railway since the moment it came out of the box. Then, ten minutes before bedtime, the lamps flickered, the horn wheezed, and the engine crawled to a stop halfway across the bridge. Lina pressed every button. Nothing. "No!" she cried. "It's only new! It can't be broken already!"
