Teta's Sea Glass

On the windowsill at Teta's flat there was a jar full of sea glass: little pieces of green, blue and frosty white glass, all smooth and rounded like pebbles. After dinner, Teta tipped some into Lina's hands. "I've been collecting these since I was a girl," she said.

"Why is it called sea glass?" asked Lina. "Because the sea made it," said Teta. "Each piece was once a broken bottle, sharp and dangerous. Then the waves rolled it in the sand, over and over, for twenty or thirty years, until all the sharp edges were gone."

"Thirty years!" said Lina. "That's even older than Mama!" Teta laughed. "The sea is very patient," she said. "It's never in a hurry. And look what it makes." Lina held a blue piece up to the lamp. It glowed like a tiny piece of sky.

Teta let Lina keep the blue piece. At home, Mama tucked her in, and she held the sea glass tight. "Good things take time," she whispered, remembering Teta's words. Then she fell asleep. The end.
