كان عند لينا هامستر جديدٌ اسمه قضّوم، ولم تطق صبراً للّعب معه. لكن كلّما نظرت في القفص وجدته كرةً من الفرو مدفونةً في القشّ. فتذمّرت: «إنّه نائمٌ دائماً! هل أوقظه؟»
Lina had a new hamster called Nibbles, and she couldn't wait to play with him. But every time she looked in the cage, Nibbles was a round ball of fur buried in the straw. "He's always asleep!" Lina complained. "Can I wake him up?"
قال بابا بلطف: «لا. الهامستر ينام في النهار ويصحو في المساء. إن أيقظناه سيكون متضايقاً وقد يعضّ قليلاً. علينا أن ننتظر حتّى يستعدّ.» فتنهّدت لينا وجلست قرب القفص بثياب النوم.
"No," said Baba gently. "Hamsters sleep while it's light and wake up in the evening. If we wake him, he'll be grumpy and might nip. We just have to wait until he's ready." Lina sighed and sat down by the cage in her pyjamas.
فانتظرا. اهتزّ القشّ، وظهر أنفٌ ورديٌّ صغير، ثمّ زحف قضّوم إلى الخارج، وتثاءب تثاؤباً هائلاً، وغسل وجهه بكفّيه، وقفز إلى عجلته يدور ويصرّ. فوضعت لينا يديها على فمها لتبقى هادئةً.
They waited. The straw twitched. A little pink nose appeared. Then Nibbles crawled out, yawned an enormous yawn, washed his face with his paws and hopped onto his wheel. Round and round he ran, squeaking. Lina clapped her hands over her mouth to stay quiet.
وسمح بابا للينا أن تعطي قضّوم بذرة دوّار شمس، فحشاها في خدّه. ثمّ دثّرها بابا وقال: «صبرك أثمر. الآن صحا هو، وتستطيعين أنت أن تنامي.» فابتسمت لينا ونامت على صرير العجلة. النهاية.
Baba let Lina give Nibbles a sunflower seed, which he stuffed into his cheek. Then Baba tucked Lina into bed. "Your patience paid off," he said. "Now he's awake, and you can sleep." Lina smiled and fell asleep to the squeak of the wheel. The end.
