رأت لينا على التلفاز ولداً يرفع الكرة مئة مرّةٍ دون أن تلمس الأرض، وأرادت أن تفعل مثله. وفي الحديقة بعد العشاء أسقطت الكرة على قدمها وركلتها فطارت جانباً إلى الشجيرات. وحاولت من جديد، فحدث الشيء نفسه.
Lina had seen a boy on TV do a hundred keepy-uppies without the ball touching the ground. She wanted to do that too. In the garden after dinner, she dropped the ball onto her foot and kicked. It flew sideways into the bushes. She tried again. Same thing.
وبعد عشر محاولات رمت لينا الكرة: «لن أستطيع أبداً!» فالتقطها بابا وقال: «ذلك الولد تدرّب سنوات، بدأ بواحدة، ثمّ اثنتين. لا نعدّ إلى مئة، لنعدّ إلى اثنتين.»
After ten tries, Lina threw the ball down. "I'll never do it!" Baba picked it up. "That boy on TV practised for years," he said. "He started with one. Then two. Let's not count to a hundred. Let's count to two."
وأرى بابا لينا كيف تسقط الكرة بلطفٍ وتنقرها بأعلى القدم برفق، قليلاً إلى الأعلى. نقرةٌ ثمّ إمساك، مرّةً بعد مرّة، ثمّ بعد محاولاتٍ كثيرة: نقرة... ونقرةٌ أخرى... وإمساك! اثنتان! فصاحت لينا بصوتٍ عالٍ حتّى جاءت ماما إلى الباب.
Baba showed her how to drop the ball gently and tap it with the top of the foot, softly, just a little way up. Tap, catch. Tap, catch. Then, after lots of tries, tap... another tap... catch! Two! Lina shrieked so loudly that Mama came to the door.
ووقت النوم دثّرتها ماما وقالت: «اثنتان اليوم، وربّما ثلاث الأسبوع القادم، هكذا تبدأ المئة.» فحرّكت لينا أصابع قدميها تحت اللحاف تتدرّب على النقرات الصغيرة، حتّى نامت. النهاية.
At bedtime, Mama tucked her in. "Two today," she said. "Maybe three next week. That's how a hundred starts." Lina wriggled her toes under the duvet, practising little taps, until she fell asleep. The end.
