قبل النوم بقليل، كانت لينا تسابق بالسيارة الزرقاء على حافّة النافذة، فاصطدمت بالطرف: طَق! وتدحرجت عجلةٌ على الأرض. وامتلأت عينا لينا بالدموع: «سيارتي المفضّلة! بابا، أصلحها الآن، من فضلك!»
Just before bed, Lina was racing the blue car along the windowsill when it hit the edge with a crack. A wheel rolled across the floor. Lina's eyes filled with tears. "My favourite car! Baba, fix it now, please!"
فوجد بابا العجلة وأحضر الغراء القويّ، ووضع نقطةً صغيرةً على المحور وضغط العجلة مكانها، وقال: «هكذا. لكنّ الغراء يحتاج الليل كلّه ليتماسك، وإن حرّكها أحدٌ قبل ذلك ستسقط العجلة مرّةً أخرى.»
Baba found the wheel and fetched the strong glue. He dabbed a tiny drop on the axle and pressed the wheel on. "There," he said. "But the glue needs the whole night to set. If anyone moves it before then, the wheel will fall off again."
ووضع السيارة على الرفّ العالي. فنظرت لينا إليها؛ كانت تريد أن تتأكّد أنّها تعمل، بدفعةٍ صغيرةٍ واحدة فقط. لكنّها تذكّرت كلام بابا، وأبقت يديها تحت البطانيّة.
He placed the car on the high shelf. Lina looked up at it. She wanted to check whether it worked. Just one tiny push. But she remembered what Baba had said, and kept her hands under the blanket.
قال بابا وهو يدثّرها: «هذا أصعب جزءٍ في إصلاح أيّ شيء: الانتظار حتّى يقوى.» فهمست لينا للسيارة الزرقاء بليلةٍ سعيدة، وأغمضت عينيها، وتركت الغراء يعمل بهدوءٍ وبطء. النهاية.
"That's the hardest bit of fixing anything," said Baba, tucking her in. "Waiting while it gets strong." Lina whispered goodnight to the blue car, closed her eyes, and let the glue do its slow, quiet work. The end.
