قصة قبل النوم عن الشجاعة والتغلّب على الخوف عند النوم للأطفال الذين يحبّون القطارات

كان تحذير العاصفة في الراديو طوال المساء، ومع وقت النوم وصلت الريح: دفعت البيت، وجعلت إطار النافذة يطقطق، وبين حينٍ وآخر تجد الفجوة في المدخنة القديمة فتطلق عويلاً طويلاً: ووووو! كأنّه يأتي من داخل الجدران. واستلقى مَجْد متصلّباً تحت اللحاف، يعدّ الثواني بين عواءٍ وآخر. وحين هزّ أعلى عواءٍ الزجاج، توقّف عن التظاهر بأنّه بخير: «بابا!»

The storm warning had been on the radio all evening, and by bedtime the wind had arrived. It pushed against the house, made the window frame creak, and every so often it found the gap in the old chimney and let out a long, howling WHOOOOO that seemed to come from inside the walls. Majd lay rigid under the duvet, counting the seconds between howls. When the loudest one yet shook the glass, he gave up pretending to be fine. "Baba!"

فجاء بابا بردائه وجلس على السرير، ولم يقل إنّه لا شيء يخيف، بل أصغى مائلاً برأسه حتّى جاء العواء التالي، ثمّ قال: «همم. أتعرف؟ هذه بالضبط نغمة الصفّارة البخاريّة القديمة، تلك التي كانت قطارات الليل تستعملها في أنفاق الجبال. يندفع الهواء من فجوةٍ ضيّقةٍ فيصدر هذا الصوت. مدخنتكم صفّارة، والريح تنفخ فيها.»

In came Baba, in his dressing gown, and sat on the bed. He didn't say there was nothing to be scared of. He just listened, head on one side, until the next howl came. "Hm," he said. "Do you know, that's exactly the note of an old steam whistle? The kind they used on night trains going through mountain tunnels. The air rushes through a narrow gap and makes that sound. Your chimney is a whistle, and the wind is blowing it."

فاعتدل مَجْد قليلاً؛ كان ذلك مثيراً للاهتمام. وجاء العواء التالي، فأصغى إليه هذه المرّة جيّداً؛ كان يشبه الصفّارة فعلاً، يعلو ويهبط. فقال ببطء: «إن كان قطاراً، فإلى أين يذهب؟» قال بابا: «فوق التلال، يجمع الغيوم كلّها ويأخذها إلى البحر.» واخترعا معاً الطريق: محطّة الرعد، ومحطّة الرذاذ، والجسر الطويل فوق الخليج. وصارت كلّ هبّةٍ محطّةً جديدة، ووجد مَجْد نفسه ينتظرها.

Majd sat up a little. That was interesting. The next WHOOOO came, and this time he listened to it properly. It did sound like a whistle, rising and falling. "If it's a train," he said slowly, "where's it going?" "Over the hills," said Baba, "collecting all the clouds and taking them out to sea." Together they invented the route: Thunder Junction, Drizzle Halt, the long viaduct over the bay. Every gust became another station, and Majd found he was listening out for them.

وببطءٍ بدأت العاصفة تبتعد، وخفت الصفير كأنّ قطار الريح يلتفّ حول منعطفٍ بعيد. فسوّى بابا اللحاف ودثّره وقال: «فعلت شيئاً ذكيّاً الليلة: كنت خائفاً، وبدلاً من أن تختبئ من الصوت، صرت فضوليّاً تجاهه. هكذا يفعل الشجعان.» وأصغى مَجْد إلى عواءٍ أخيرٍ بعيد، وهمس: «تصبح على خير يا قطار الريح»، ونام قبل أن يتلاشى. النهاية.

Slowly, the storm began to move away. The whistles grew fainter, as if the wind train were rounding a distant bend. Baba straightened the duvet and tucked Majd in. "You did something clever tonight," he said. "You were frightened, and instead of hiding from the sound, you got curious about it. That's how brave people work." Majd listened to one last faraway WHOOOO. "Goodnight, wind train," he whispered, and was asleep before it faded. The end.
