قصة قبل النوم للبنات عن الشجاعة والتغلّب على الخوف عند النوم، لكلّ بنتٍ تحبّ القطارات

في الآونة الأخيرة صار وقت النوم مشكلة؛ ما إن ينطفئ المصباح حتّى يبدو الظلام كأنّه يضغط من كلّ جهة، ويملؤه خيال لينا بأشياء كثيرة. ولم تختلف الليلة، فتوسّلت حين مدّت ماما يدها إلى المفتاح: «ألا تتركينه؟ المصباح فقط، الليلة فقط.» فتوقّفت ماما وقالت بلطف: «قلنا الليلة فقط طوال أسبوع. لنجرّب شيئاً آخر.»

Lately, bedtime had become a problem. As soon as the lamp went off, the darkness seemed to press in from every side, and Lina's imagination filled it with all sorts of things. Tonight was no different. "Can't you leave it on?" she pleaded, as Mama reached for the switch. "Just the lamp. Just tonight." Mama paused. "We've done 'just tonight' for a week," she said kindly. "Let's try something else."

فسحبت اللحاف عن السرير ونشرته فوق كرسيّين، فصار نفقاً طويلاً منخفضاً على السجّادة، وسألت: «أتعرفين نفق بحر المانش؟ تعبر القطارات تحت البحر كلّه، في ظلامٍ دامس، عشرين دقيقة. والركّاب يقرؤون ويتحدّثون وينامون، ولا يخافون، لأنّهم يعرفون أنّ للنفق بداية ووسطاً ونهاية، وأنّ السائق يعرف الطريق.» وناولتها مصباحها الصغير: «أتريدين أن تكوني السائقة؟»

She pulled the duvet off the bed and draped it over two chairs, making a long, low tunnel on the rug. "Do you know about the Channel Tunnel?" she asked. "Trains go under the whole sea, in the pitch dark, for twenty minutes. The passengers read and chat and sleep. They're not scared, because they know the tunnel has a beginning, a middle and an end, and that the driver knows the way." She handed Lina her little torch. "Want to be the driver?"

فزحفت لينا إلى الداخل تدفع القاطر أمامها. في البداية أبقت المصباح مضاءً، فكان النفق مجرّد لحاف. ثمّ قالت ماما: «والآن جرّبي القسم الأوسط بلا أضواء، مثل القطار الحقيقيّ.» فأطفأت لينا المصباح؛ كان المكان مظلماً جدّاً، وقلبها يدقّ. لكنّها أحسّت بالسجّادة الناعمة، وسمعت ماما تدندن عند الطرف البعيد، وشمّت رائحة مسحوق الغسيل المألوفة. لا شيء في الظلام جديد؛ كلّ شيءٍ كما كان في الضوء.

Lina crawled in, pushing her toy engine ahead. At first she kept the torch on, and the tunnel was just a duvet. Then Mama said, "Now try the middle section without lights, like the real train." Lina switched off the torch. It was very dark, and her heart thumped. But she could feel the soft rug, hear Mama humming at the far end, and smell the familiar washing powder. Nothing in the dark was new. It was all the same as it had been in the light.

وخرجت من الطرف الآخر وسط التصفيق، وأعلنت ماما: «اكتمل عبور النفق.» وأعادا اللحاف إلى السرير، وحين أطفأت ماما المصباح تخيّلت لينا الغرفة المظلمة نفقاً آخر، له بداية (وقت النوم)، ووسط (النوم)، ونهاية (الصباح، وماما وبابا عند الطرف الآخر). وهمست ماما وهي تدثّرها: «قيادةٌ شجاعة.» فأغمضت لينا عينيها وتركت القطار يحملها عبر النفق. النهاية.

She emerged at the other end to applause. "Tunnel complete," Mama announced. They put the duvet back on the bed, and when Mama switched off the lamp, Lina pictured the dark room as one more tunnel, with a beginning (bedtime), a middle (sleep) and an end (morning, with Mama and Baba at the far side). "Brave driving," Mama whispered, tucking her in. Lina closed her eyes and let the train carry her through. The end.
