Majd was too old to be scared of the dark, or at least that's what he kept telling himself. But every night he quietly asked for the landing light to be left on and the door left open, and if anyone closed it even a little, he felt his chest go tight. Tonight Baba sat on the end of the bed and asked, gently, what exactly it was about the dark. Majd thought about it. "It's not knowing what's there," he said. "In the light, you can see everything. In the dark, anything could be there."
