Waiting for the Moon

Baba had said that tonight there would be a full moon, huge and orange, rising over the rooftops. Majd wanted to see it so much that he put on his pyjamas extra fast. But when he got to the window, there was nothing there, just dark sky above the houses. "Where is it?" he cried.

"The moon doesn't hurry for anyone," said Baba, pulling up a chair. "It rises a little at a time. We just have to watch and wait." So they waited. Majd wriggled. He counted the chimneys. He asked if it was coming yet, four times.

Then Majd noticed a soft glow behind the tallest roof. The glow grew brighter. A thin orange curve appeared, then a bigger one, and then, slowly, the whole enormous moon lifted itself into the sky, glowing like a lantern.

"Wow," whispered Majd. "It was worth waiting for." "The best things often are," said Baba. They watched until the moon turned silver. Then Baba carried Majd to bed and tucked him in, and the moon shone through the curtains as he fell asleep. The end.
