The Brave Walk Down the Hall

Baba had just finished the chapter of the princess book, the one where the princess crept through the dark castle with her lantern, and had turned off the lamp, when Majd sat bolt upright. "I need the toilet." The bathroom was at the far end of the upstairs hall. At night, with all the doors closed and the only light a faint glow from downstairs, it seemed twice as long, and full of shapes. "Will you come with me?" Majd asked. Baba paused. "I will if you need me," he said. "But I've got a better idea."

He opened the drawer and took out the little wind-up torch. "What did the princess carry into the dark castle?" "A lantern," said Majd. "And was she scared?" "A bit. But she went anyway." "That's what brave means," said Baba. "Being scared a bit and going anyway. Here's your lantern. I'll stand right here in your doorway, where you can see me the whole time. You can shine it back at me whenever you want, and I'll wave. And if you change your mind halfway, you just say so." Majd took the torch. It felt heavier than usual, and important.

He wound it up and stepped into the hall. The beam made a bright circle on the carpet. He moved it along the walls: there was the picture of Teta's village, there was the laundry basket, which had looked like a crouching animal a moment ago and was just a laundry basket. Halfway, Majd's heart thumped, and he spun round and shone the torch back. Baba was there, filling the doorway, and gave a big royal wave. Majd giggled, turned back and kept going. The bathroom door. The light switch. Bright, ordinary light. He had done it.

The walk back was much quicker. Majd even turned the torch off for two steps. Baba scooped him up at the door and tucked him back into bed. "How was the dark castle?" he asked. "It was just the hall," said Majd. "And the laundry basket." Baba laughed. "That's usually how it goes. Things in the dark get smaller when you walk towards them." Majd put the torch under his pillow, like a princess's lantern. "Next time I'll go on my own," he said. "I believe it," said Baba. Majd fell asleep proud. The end.
