Majd had saved up for a toy submarine for weeks: a proper one that dived when you wound it up and came back to the surface on its own when the spring ran down. It had arrived that evening, and Majd could hardly wait to try it. But when Mama turned on the bath taps, there was only a thin layer of water at the bottom. Majd hovered by the bath, asking if it was ready yet. "Not yet," said Mama each time. "It needs to be deep enough to dive."
