وعد بابا مَجْد أن يلعب معه الكرة بعد العمل، لكنّه تأخّر الليلة. فجلس مَجْد عند النافذة والكرة معه يراقب البوّابة، وكلّ دقيقةٍ كأنّها ساعة: «لن يأتي أبداً.»
Baba had promised to play football with Majd after work. But tonight he was late. Majd sat by the window with his ball, watching the gate. Every minute felt like an hour. "He's never coming," he said.
قالت ماما: «سيأتي، والانتظار أسهل حين تنشغل. هل نتدرّب ونحن ننتظر؟» ووضعت وسادتين كمرمىً في المدخل، فتدرّب مَجْد على تمريراتٍ لطيفةٍ نحو الحائط يعدّها: عشرة، عشرون، اثنتان وثلاثون.
"He's coming," said Mama. "Waiting is easier if you're busy. Shall we practise while we wait?" She set up two cushions as a goal in the hall. Majd practised gentle passes against the wall, counting each one. Ten. Twenty. Thirty-two.
وعند الحادية والأربعين دار المفتاح في القفل، ودخل بابا متعباً: «آسفٌ على التأخير، هل فات وقت اللعب؟» فنظرت ماما إلى الساعة: «خمس دقائق، ثمّ الحمّام.» فرمى بابا حقيبته ووقف بين الوسادتين.
At forty-one, the key turned in the lock. Baba came in, looking tired. "Sorry I'm late," he said. "Is it too late for a game?" Mama looked at the clock. "Five minutes," she said. "Then bath." Baba dropped his bag and stood between the cushions.
فسجّل مَجْد ثلاثة أهدافٍ في خمس دقائق، بفضل التدريب كلّه. ثمّ جاء الحمّام، ودثّرته ماما وقالت: «انتظرت جيّداً جدّاً.» فابتسم مَجْد؛ خمس دقائق مع بابا كانت تستحقّ الانتظار كلّه. النهاية.
Majd scored three goals in five minutes, all thanks to the practice. Then came the bath, and Mama tucked him in. "You waited so well," she said. Majd smiled. Five minutes with Baba had been worth the whole wait. The end.
