كان الطفل يوسف متضايقاً كلّ ليلةٍ ذلك الأسبوع، فما إن تطفئ ماما الضوء الكبير حتّى يبدأ بالنحيب. قال بابا وهو يهزّه: «لا يحبّ الظلام، فالغرفة كبيرةٌ سوداء على طفلٍ صغير.» فأصغت لينا من سريرها، ثمّ نظرت إلى سقف غرفتها.
Baby Yusuf had been grumpy every bedtime that week. As soon as Mama turned off the big light, he started to wail. "He doesn't like the dark," said Baba, rocking him. "It's a big, black room for a small baby." Lina listened from her bed, then looked up at her own ceiling.
كانت عليه أمواجٌ زرقاء بطيئة تنساب، وأسماكٌ صغيرةٌ تسبح فيها؛ إنّه ضوء لينا الليليّ البحريّ، أحسن هديّةٍ نالتها في حياتها. فأطفأته وحملته ومشت بهدوءٍ إلى الغرفة المجاورة: «يستطيع يوسف أن يستعيره.»
On it, slow blue waves were drifting, with little fish swimming through them. It was Lina's sea night light, the best present she had ever had. She switched it off, picked it up, and padded next door. "Yusuf can borrow it," she said.
فوصله بابا بالكهرباء قرب السرير، فامتلأ السقف بماءٍ أزرق وأسماكٍ تسبح. فتوقّف يوسف عن النحيب، وتابعت عيناه سمكةً من جهةٍ إلى أخرى، ثمّ أخرى، وانفتحت قبضتاه، وتثاقل جفناه شيئاً فشيئاً، فرفع بابا إبهامه للينا بصمت.
Baba plugged it in by the cot. The ceiling filled with blue water and swimming fish. Yusuf stopped wailing. His eyes followed a fish from one side to the other. Then another. His fists uncurled, and his eyelids slowly drooped. Baba gave Lina a silent thumbs up.
وفي غرفتها كان الظلام أكثر من المعتاد، لكنّ بابا جلس على سريرها يصنع بيديه أشكال سمكٍ على الجدار من ضوء الممرّ، وهمس: «كان هذا لطفاً كبيراً.» فابتسمت لينا: «فليبقَ معه حتّى لا يخاف»، ونامت. النهاية.
Back in her own room, it was darker than usual. But Baba sat on her bed and made fish shapes with his hands on the wall, using the light from the landing. "That was a big, kind thing," he whispered. Lina smiled. "He can keep it till he's not scared," she said, and fell asleep. The end.
