For as long as Lina could remember, she had been scared of the bath plughole. Not the bath itself, which was lovely, warm and full of bubbles, but the moment at the end when Mama pulled out the plug. The water would spin round and round, and then came the noise: a long, deep, slurping gurgle, like a giant drinking through a straw. Lina always leapt out with her heart pounding and wouldn't look back. Tonight, wrapped in a towel, she finally asked. "Mama, where does it actually go? It sounds like something's down there, swallowing it."
